Quality matters: Improving the quality of biological resources
Session 4: Quality control in Biobanks
Evidence-based biobanking practices.
Methods for collecting, processing, storing and analyzing biospecimens have been developed with little consideration for standardization or long-term quality management. Various pre-analytical variables can affect the quality of biospecimens. There is the potential for: incorrect diagnoses; incorrect treatment; irreproducible results; and the potential for misinterpretation of artifacts as new biomarkers. The future development of international collaboration in biobanking will require evidence-based biobanking practices in order to exchange samples and data of consistent quality.
